Helmets for All

Posted by Miron Construction

Miron continues to push the envelope with what we are able to accomplish together through our Safety, Quality, Production (SQP) philosophy. The level of effort our project site, office, and Yard teams have put forth these past few years is nothing short of amazing. While we host safety trainings, appreciation events, and summits, as well as keep mental health discussions at the forefront, we need to continue to challenge ourselves to make the construction industry safer. We know our safety influence makes an impact when our employees return home to their loved ones each day.

Last year, Miron’s ownership put forth an effort to better understand the idea of utilizing Type 2 hard hats (helmets) in the construction industry. It is well-known that construction workers sustain more Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs) than employees in any other industry in the United States. TBIs represent 25% of all construction fatalities, and more than half of fatal work-related traumatic injuries were a result of falls. Safety helmets, with the use of chinstraps, dramatically reduce the frequency and severity of TBIs due to their retention systems and their ability to better protect the head against front, top, rear, and side impacts and penetration.

After looking at several Type 2 options, we discovered another manufacturer — STUDSON. They are relatively new to the construction world but are rapidly gaining traction. The company’s sole focus is to consistently deliver the most innovative head protection on the market so employees can return home safe every night. Miron provides a vented traditional style (SHK-1 Vented) and a vented full-brim option (SHK-1 Full-Brim Vented), which offers better protection from the sun and falling debris.  These Type 2 helmets feature chinstraps that meet desired performance standards and provide superior head protection in comparison to our standard hard hats.

As a leader in the construction industry, Miron has always driven towards continuous improvement. When we developed our SQP philosophy nine years ago, we set out to raise the bar every day through operational improvement and excellence. We further broadened that objective by adopting “Stay Grounded” as one of our core values, focusing on caring for one another and protecting our most valuable asset — our people!
